Pasteuria nishizawae is a soil-inhabiting bacterium that produces spores that attach to the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). After attachment, the bacterium infects the nematode body, consumes the nematode internally for nutrition while reproducing its cells. Eventually new bacterial spores are formed and exit from the infected nematode when the body ruptures. This bacterium is a specific, obligate parasite of the soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines, and will not affect other plant-parasitic nematodes that are present.
